Storytelling is one of the activities that parents can do with their children. However, opinions divide over whether grown-ups should actually do this or not. In this, I am inclined to side with trying to read stories to children whenever possible as parents, although the other view merits some discussion as well.
On the one hand, there are reasons for parents to eschew storytime for their offspring, and instead let the young ones watch TV or read books. By doing so, the adults would have more time for themselves, or at the very least, be able to devote more time to working to support the household. However, there is no doubt that this happens at the expense of the sacred bond between parent and child. For children who were not shown proper attachment, trusting Mom and Dad when growing up later might be a struggle, as is trying to form bonds with their own offspring. The lack of intimacy stemming from this seemingly insignificant decision can become concerning.
On the other hand, storytime between parent and child is positive despite some misgivings. While the grown-ups will definitely be deprived of time, this sacrifice is usually worth it, because the family will be more closely knitted. Children will be more trustful of their guardians, and more willing to replicate kindness towards their parents and their own offspring later on. Additionally, storytelling helps to develop the child’s imagination and language skills, among many aspects. The young ones’ creativity can be stoked by listening to tales of fantastical characters, and their lexica, by the same token, become richer through exposure to new words. Therefore, having any storytime clearly comes across as more consequential than not having at all.
In conclusion, while both sides of the debate have merits, I believe that being able to reserve storytime to children is the superior choice for parents. Because of the benefits in bonding and the young’s various skills, adults are recommended to read tales to their offspring.
